Manage participants
Everything to do with who is in a group happens in the group's info panel: seeing the members, promoting an admin, adding people, removing them, and leaving yourself.
Open the group's info
Select the group's name or photo at the top of the conversation.
On desktop web the group info opens as a panel on the right of the conversation. On iOS, Android and a narrow browser window it opens as its own screen with a back button.
The panel opens on a Participants section: the first three members, with the total on the right as "12 members" (or "1 member"). Select See All Participants to open the full list, headed All Participants, which loads more people as you scroll.
Selecting anyone's photo — in the preview or the full list — opens their profile card, from where you can start a one-to-one conversation with them.
The Admin badge
Group administrators are marked with a small blue Admin pill next to their name. It appears everywhere a participant row is shown, including the three-person preview, and it updates as soon as somebody's role changes.
Admins are the people who can add participants, hand out invite links, change the group's settings, promote other admins and remove members. Everybody else can read, write and leave.
The badge says nothing about workspace roles. A workspace administrator is not automatically a group admin, and a group admin does not gain any workspace-wide powers.
Add participants
Available to group admins.
- In the group's info panel, select Add Participants.
- Search in the box prompting
Add participants…and select the people you want. They collect into a Selected row as removable chips. - Select Add.
Add stays greyed out until at least one person is selected. To add the whole workspace in one go, select Add All instead — that button acts immediately, without a confirmation step.
The search only lists people who are not already active in the group, so you cannot add someone twice. If the request fails you get a Couldn't add participants notice and nobody is added.
Make or remove a group admin
Available to group admins, from the All Participants list.
On the web, hover a row and select the chevron button at its right-hand end. On iOS and Android, press and hold the row until the Participant Options sheet appears.
- Open the menu on the person's row.
- Select Make Admin, or Remove Admin if they already are one.
- A confirmation appears, Update Participant Role, asking "Are you sure you want to update this participant's role?". Select Update, or Cancel to back out.
On success you get a "Participant role updated successfully!" notice and the list refreshes, so the Admin badge appears or disappears immediately. A failure shows Couldn't update participant role and nothing changes.
The last remaining administrator cannot be demoted. If you are the only admin and you want to step back, promote somebody else first, then remove your own admin role.
Remove someone from the group
Available to group admins, from the same menu.
- Open the menu on the person's row and select Remove participant.
- Confirm at the Remove Participant prompt, "Are you sure you want to remove this participant from the conversation?", with Remove.
You get a "Participant removed successfully!" notice, and the list refreshes without them. The option is not offered on your own row — to take yourself out of a group, leave it instead.
Leave a group
Anyone can leave, admins included.
- In the group's info panel, select Exit Group.
- Confirm at the Exit Group prompt, "Are you sure you want to exit? You won't be able to see new messages."
HushChat confirms with a notice naming the group you left. The conversation does not vanish — its info panel now reads "You have exited this group. You will not receive new messages.", and the member-only actions are gone. You can still open the group and read what was there before you left.
Leaving is not the same as muting. If the group is simply too noisy, set Mentions Only in Group Preferences instead — see Group settings and permissions.
What everyone else sees
Membership changes are written into the conversation as system messages, visible to everyone in the group and kept in its history. They record who added someone, who removed someone, who left, who joined through an invite link, and who was promoted to or removed from admin. People are always named, never identified by contact details; a person the app cannot resolve is shown as "Unknown User".
