Getting started

HushChat is one application that runs on the web, on iOS, and on Android. Whichever you use, you are signing in to a workspace — a private space that holds your organisation's people, conversations, and settings. Everything you can see and do in HushChat happens inside one workspace at a time.

Choose your platform

  • Web: open app.gethush.chat, or the address your organisation gave you if HushChat is self-hosted.
  • iOS and Android: install the HushChat app supplied by your organisation.

The screens look slightly different on a phone than on a wide browser window, and a few features live in different places. Those differences are collected in Web and mobile differences.

Signing in takes two steps: first you name the workspace, then you identify yourself.

  1. On Choose a workspace, type your Workspace name and select Continue.
  2. On Welcome back, enter your Email address and Password.
  3. Select Login.

If the name you typed does not match a workspace, HushChat answers No workspace found with that name. Workspace names are given to you by whoever set the workspace up — they are not something you can search for.

Forgotten your password?

Use the password reset link on the sign-in screen. HushChat emails you a code, and you enter that code together with your new password. If an administrator set your password for you, they will pass it to you directly instead.

If you do not have an account yet, Create one on the sign-in screen starts registration. You will choose a password, then confirm your email address with a verification code before you can sign in.

What you see first

A successful sign-in opens your Conversations. From there the app gives you four places to go:

DestinationWhat it holds
ConversationsEvery chat you are part of, one-to-one and group
CallsYour call history
ProfileYour name and photo, availability, blocked contacts, and account settings
AdminWorkspace administration — only if you are a workspace administrator

On the web the four live in a sidebar; on a phone they are a bar along the bottom of the screen.

Access

What you can see depends on your role in the workspace. Members see conversations and their own profile; administrators additionally see the workspace administration tools. If a screen you expect is missing, your account most likely does not have the role for it — ask a workspace administrator rather than trying to open the address directly. Roles are explained in Roles and permissions.

First steps

  • Open a conversation and send your first message.
  • Open Profile and set your name and photo so colleagues can recognise you.
  • Set your availability to Available or Busy, and say whether you are working from home.
  • Switch between light and dark using the theme control — HushChat follows your device's setting by default.

Signing out

Open Profile and select Log out. You will be returned to the sign-in screen, and you will need your workspace name and password again to come back in.
