Edit a user
Opening someone from Users replaces the list with a panel titled Edit User. Everything you can change about one person lives on this single scrolling panel, and each section saves on its own — there is no overall "save" for the screen.
To get there: Settings → Users on the web, or the Admin tab → Users on iOS and Android, then select the person. The back arrow at the top left returns you to the list.
Name and username
The top of the panel shows the person's picture and name, then three fields:
| Field | Editable |
|---|---|
| First Name | Yes |
| Last Name | Yes |
| Username | No — shown for reference only |
Change either name and a Save Changes button appears below the fields. It only exists while there is something unsaved, so if you cannot see it, nothing has changed. Saving confirms with "User updated successfully".
Role
Under Role sit the four roles, each with the one-line description the app gives it. The person's current role is highlighted and marked Current.
| Role | What the app says |
|---|---|
| Admin | Full workspace management, sees everyone |
| Member | Regular user, sees everyone |
| Agent | Sees only assigned customers and admins |
| Customer | Sees only assigned agents |
Select a different role and HushChat asks you to confirm — "Are you sure you want to make {name} a member of this workspace?" — with the confirm button naming the role, for example Make Member. The change applies as soon as you confirm.
The panel says so plainly: "You cannot change your own role." In practice you will not run into this from the Users list, because your own account is never listed there.
Assigned Agents
An Assigned Agents section appears between Role and Account Status, but only when both of these are true:
- Customer mode is turned on in Workspace Settings, and
- the person you have open holds the Customer role.
If either is false, the section is simply not there. Set the role to Customer first and it appears.
Each agent in the workspace is listed with their name and a state on the right: Assign when they are not attached to this customer, Assigned when they are. Select a row to flip it. A Save Assigned Agents button appears once you have actually changed something; select it, and HushChat confirms with "Assigned agents updated".
If the section says "No agents in this workspace yet. Set a user's role to Agent first.", nobody holds the Agent role yet — give someone that role and come back.
Whatever is selected at the moment you save becomes the complete set of that customer's agents. To unassign an agent, deselect them and save — there is no separate remove action. Saving with nothing selected is allowed, and leaves that customer with no agent at all.
Three limits are worth planning around:
- You always assign from the customer's panel, never the agent's. There is no agent-side screen listing the customers attached to one agent. Loading a single agent with ten customers means opening ten customers and saving each one.
- The picker only reads the first 200 people in the workspace. In a workspace larger than that, some agents will not appear in the list at all.
- The customer's own app does not update instantly. The server is correct the moment you save, but someone with HushChat already open keeps their old list until the app refetches. Ask them to reopen or refresh.
Account Status
Account Status shows a pill reading either Active or Suspended, with a button beside it to switch between the two. This is the whole of the suspension controls, and it is covered in detail on Suspend and remove users.
Upload Quota
Upload Quota governs how much this person may upload per month. The top of the section shows the current month's usage against their effective limit, with a bar and the amount remaining, and a line reading "Workspace default:" followed by the allowance everyone gets.
Three buttons choose how the limit is decided:
| Choice | Effect |
|---|---|
| Use Default | Removes any personal limit; the person falls back to the workspace default. |
| Custom | A limit for this person only. Type a number and pick MB or GB. |
| Unlimited | No monthly cap for this person. |
Select Save Quota to apply. A custom limit needs a whole number greater than zero — otherwise you get "Enter a valid number" and nothing is saved. A limit of Unlimited is also what the usage line displays when no cap applies.
IP restrictions for one person
Below the quota are this person's IP controls. They sit alongside — not instead of — the workspace-wide allow-list in Workspace Settings.
Exempt from IP restriction is a switch, described as "When on, this user can connect from any IP even while the workspace allowlist restricts everyone else." Use it for the person who travels, or for a machine account that cannot sit behind your office address.
Blocked IP Addresses does the opposite for this one person: "Block specific IP addresses for this user. The user will be denied access from these IPs." To add one:
- Enter an address or range in the field marked "IP or CIDR to block (e.g. 192.168.1.100)".
- Optionally name it in "Label (optional, e.g. Mobile device)" so you remember why it is there.
- Select Block IP.
Anything that is not a valid address or CIDR range is refused with "Enter a valid IP address or CIDR range". Existing entries are listed with their label and a bin icon to remove them. When there are none, the section reads "No blocked IPs. This user can access from any allowed IP."
The rest of the panel
Two sections finish the panel, each with its own page:
- Password — generate a new password for this person. See Reset a user password.
- Danger Zone — remove them from the workspace. See Suspend and remove users.
