Reactions
A reaction is a one-tap response to a message — useful for acknowledging something without adding another message to the conversation.
The six reactions
HushChat has a fixed set of six. There is no way to react with an arbitrary emoji.
| Reaction | Name |
|---|---|
| 👍 | Like |
| ❤️ | Love |
| 😂 | Haha |
| 😮 | Wow |
| 😠 | Angry |
| 😢 | Sad |
React to a message
| Platform | How to react |
|---|---|
| Web | Hover the message and select the smiley next to it — the six reactions appear as a row |
| iOS and Android | Long-press the message — the six reactions appear as a pill above it |
Select one and it is added straight away.
On iOS and Android the pill puts the reactions you have used most recently first, so your usual response is closest to your thumb. The web row always uses the fixed order above.
One reaction each
You get one reaction per message.
- Selecting a reaction when you have none adds it.
- Selecting a different one replaces the one you had.
- Selecting the same one again removes it.
Your current reaction is highlighted in the picker, so you can always tell what you have already left.
The reaction summary
Once a message has at least one reaction, a small rounded summary appears underneath it, on the same side as the message. It shows:
- Up to four different emoji, most-used first.
- The total number of reactions on that message, counting everybody.
Reactions from everyone are counted together — the summary is per message, not per person.
See who reacted
Select the summary to open the list of people who reacted. It is titled Reactions and shows each person's reaction next to their name. Long lists load more as you scroll.
| Platform | How it opens |
|---|---|
| Web | A panel next to the message |
| iOS and Android | A sheet from the bottom of the screen |
If the list is empty it reads "No reactions yet". Close it by selecting outside it.
People are listed by name. If a name is missing, HushChat shows Unknown User rather than any other identifying detail.
When you cannot react
The reaction controls are hidden or inactive in a few situations:
- The conversation is blocked. Reactions are unavailable in a conversation where you have blocked the other person, or they have blocked you.
- You are selecting messages to forward. Leave selection mode first — see Forward, copy, and message info.
- The message was unsent. An unsent message keeps no reactions and cannot take new ones.
- It is a system message. The small centred notices about pinning, group changes and similar events are not messages you can react to.
If a reaction does not seem to stick, check your connection and try again — HushChat shows a brief "Couldn't complete action" notice when a reaction fails to save, and the count returns to what it was.
