GIFs and emoji

The composer's emoji button opens one picker with two tabs: Emoji and GIFs.

Platform

On the web the picker floats above the composer. On iOS and Android it takes the place of the keyboard, so the conversation stays visible behind it.

Add an emoji

  1. Open a conversation and select the emoji button in the composer.
  2. Stay on the Emoji tab.
  3. Find the one you want, either by browsing or by typing into Search emojis.
  4. Select it. The emoji is added to your message — it does not send on its own, so you can keep typing and send when you are ready.

Search matches an emoji's name and its tags, so party finds the party popper without you knowing what it is called. If nothing matches you get No emojis found; clear the box with the small cross to go back to browsing.

Browsing by category

A row of category buttons sits under the search box. Left to right they cover everything, then smileys, people, nature, food, travel, activities, objects, symbols and flags. Selecting one filters the grid and clears any search you had typed.

Recently used

Once you have used a few emoji, a Recently used strip appears at the top of the grid, with the rest of the set under a heading of All. It only shows while you are browsing everything with no search active — pick a category or start searching and the grid is just the results.

Send a GIF

  1. Select the emoji button in the composer, then the GIFs tab.
  2. Browse what is trending, or narrow it with one of the quick picks along the top: Trending, Reactions, Love, LOL, Wow, Sad, Angry, Yes, No, Thanks.
  3. Or type what you want into Search KLIPY.
  4. Select a GIF.
caution

Selecting a GIF sends it straight away. Unlike a photo, there is no preview or caption step, and no chance to change your mind before it goes.

The grid keeps loading as you scroll, so scrolling down gets you more results rather than running out. If a search comes back with nothing you get No GIFs found.

tip

If you are replying to a message when you pick a GIF, the GIF is sent as that reply.

GIFs are powered by Klipy

HushChat's GIF search comes from Klipy, and the app credits it where it is used:

  • The search box in the GIFs tab prompts you with Search KLIPY.
  • A Powered by KLIPY logo sits along the bottom of the GIF grid.
  • A small KLIPY watermark appears on GIFs in the conversation.

Searching in the GIFs tab sends your search terms to Klipy in order to fetch results. Everything else in the picker — the emoji set, your recently used list — stays inside HushChat.

Where the tabs do not appear

The GIFs tab is only there when sending a GIF makes sense. Editing a message you already sent, for example, gives you the emoji picker without it — you can add an emoji to the text you are editing, but you cannot swap a message for a GIF.

Emoji elsewhere in HushChat

Emoji are not limited to the composer. You can also react to someone else's message with one, which attaches it to their message instead of sending a new one. See Reactions in the Messages section.
